DescriptionBarrel-shaped, grey stoneware pitcher with a sprig-molded scene, two bands of borders, and blue decoration. The pitcher has a plain vertical rim with a small spout, sides that swell then narrow, and an inset bottom. Two bands of decoration, probably applied with a roulette wheel, are located on the body of the pitcher; one is about two inches below the rim, and the other is about two inches above the bottom. Each band of decoration consists of two rows of short, vertical, incised lines with a pattern of overlapping circles between. A narrow band of cobalt blue decoration is located above and below each border. A mold-formed handle connects the neck with the body of the pitcher. Opposite the handle and below the spout, a light blue sprig-molded scene is applied to the pitcher between the borders. In the background, the scene shows a long boat with a low roof on top of a mountain, all under a rainbow. In the foreground, a bearded man in a robe kneels down, holding a small shovel in his hand. Plants, possibly grapevines, are located on either side of the man.

NotesSubject Note: The sprig-molded relief decoration shows a scene from the Old Testament, after the flood waters have receded and Noah has grounded the ark on Mount Ararat. God promised that He would never destroy the earth by flood again. As a sign of His covenant, He caused a rainbow to appear. Subsequently, Noah planted a vineyard. (Hunt 2/14/2005)On View
