DescriptionCylindrical, stoneware lidded jar or crock with a flattened, canted rim, sides that taper slightly from bottom to top, and a flat bottom. Two projecting, cupped handles have been applied on opposite sides of the jar/crock (.a). To one side, between the handles, a heart-shaped wreath with the letter "S" inside is stamped, or stenciled, in cobalt blue. The exterior of the jar/crock is salt glazed, while the inside is coated with a brown slip glaze, or Albany-type glaze. There is light crazing over all the glazed surfaces of the jar/crock, and one chip on the inside edge of the rim.
The mechanically-molded, domed lid (.b) does not match the color or glaze of the jar/crock; the lid is glazed on the exterior and interior with a white Bristol-type glaze. The lid has a raised, disc-shaped finial in the center, at the top of the dome, surrounded by an unglazed area, then a relatively flat area at the rim.
