DescriptionLight grey stoneware jug with a cylindrical rim, conical shoulder, cylindrical body, and recessed bottom. An applied handle connects the rim with the shoulder of the jug. The jug is glazed on the interior and exterior with a white glaze, or Bristol-type glaze. The retailer's name is printed in blue on the side of the jug opposite the handle, "THE W. W. WALKER CO./ HARTFORD, CONN./ BOSTON BRANCH GROCERY". The surface of the jug is pitted with small, black indentations where the glaze covered the uneven surface of the stoneware. There is light crazing over all the surfaces of the jug.

MarkingsThe retailer's name is printed on the side of the jug opposite the handle, "THE W. W. WALKER CO./ HARTFORD, CONN./ BOSTON BRANCH GROCERY".

A large rectangular paper label hangs by a string from the handle of the jug. It reads, "Name/ Address/ Mark/ C. O. D./ Paid/ Charge/ Salesman/ Deliver/ TOPHAMS/ MANUFACTURERS AND DEALERS IN ALL KINDS OF/ TRAVELERS' GOODS". These letters are printed in black or red, and the form is not filled out, with the exception of several large letter 'X's hand-written over the top few lines. NotesOwner Note: Based on the information on the label attached to the handle of the jug, this jug was delivered from the grocer to the house of Florence Crofut. The contents of this particular jug are unknown, but a related jug, 1974.50.2330, was also delivered to Florence S. M. Crofut and contained cider vinegar. (Hunt 2/17/2005)
