DescriptionRound, whiteware mug with a brown glaze. The sides of the mug swell briefly just above the foot, then narrow again to form vertical sides. The brown glaze, applied over the white body of the mug, fades from a dark brown at the base to a lighter brown in the middle, then back again to a dark brown at the rim. The handle follows the same pattern of dark, then light, then dark glaze. The only additional ornament on the mug consists of the gilded words "NEW HAVEN GRAYS/ Semper Fidelis/ 1816 [followed by a long, thick gilded line] 1912" printed to the left of the handle. The gilding on the long, thick line has begun to wear off.

MarkingsAn underglaze green printed mark of the elaborately intertwined letters "S", "T", and "W" over the word "CHINA" is on the bottom of the mug.A rectangular, white sticker on the bottom of the mug reads, "THE COLONY SHOP/ New Haven Colony/ Historical Society/ New Haven, Conn."
To the left of the handle on the side of the mug, the following gilded words appear: "NEW HAVEN GRAYS/ Semper Fidelis/ 1816 [followed by a long, thick gilded line] 1912".NotesSubject Note: During the War of 1812, with the British raiding along the coast, it was decided to form a second company of Light Infantry to protect New Haven, Connecticut. On 13 September 1816, the New Haven Grays were formed from members of the New Haven Militia and new recruits. Since that time, the Grays have participated in most major wars: the Civil War, World War I and II, and the Korean War. In 1992, the designation the "New Haven Grays" was passed to the 1st Battalion 102nd Infantry Regiment, part of the Connecticut Army National Guard.
