DescriptionRound, ironstone plate with a printed underglaze cobalt blue decoration that was then made to run in the kiln, a type of ceramic known as flow blue. The center of the plate is plain, but there is a printed border at the inside edge of the rim that consists of a series of alternating diamonds and scrolls. The rim of the plate has a border of white flowers and leaves on a dark blue background. The outer edge of the rim has a shaped, undulating edge and a raised pattern that looks like fish scales. The raised decoration is plain white, or light blue, making it stand out from the darker designs below. The center of the plate has a considerable number of scratches, probably the result of use over time.
Object number1977.61.5
MarkingsThere are three marks on the bottom of the plate: a brown, printed, underglaze mark that states "PATENTED,/ OCT. 19th..97,U.S.A."; an impressed mark of the number "22"; and an underglaze, blue, printed mark on the rim that is unreadable. It probably consists of a banner above and a globe below, with additional words below the bottom of the banner. On View
