DescriptionOval buff-colored earthenware platter with a blue-tinted glaze, a type of ceramic known as pearlware. The platter is decorated at the rim with two types of decoration. The first, around the inner edge of the rim, consists of trailing grapevine, grapes, and leaves. The second consists of impressed curved lines at the outer edge of the rim. The impressed lines are hand-painted with underglaze cobalt blue. There is crazing in the center of the platter, as well as several spots of grey discoloration. There is also one large chip, mostly evident on the bottom of the rim. Finally, there are light scratches on both the top and bottom of the platter.

MarkingsThere is one circular impressed mark on the bottom of the platter. It reads, "PETER MORTON/ Importer/ -of-/ Earthenware/ CONNECTICUT". Additionally, there is an impressed number "16" or "91".Subject Terms
