DescriptionDecorative, round, white jasperware plate with applied sprig-molded neo-classical decoration in green and pink. The central pattern on the plate shows three women in classical dress and a winged horse standing in water. One of the women is leaning down to tend to the horse's front right hoof. This scene is surrounded by a series of concentric borders, beginning with a green border of a ribbon that circles around a vine with attached leaves. This is followed by a border with green swags of fruit and leaves that are held up by pink ram's heads. Pink ribbons hang down from the ram's heads between the swags. The areas between the swags have small applied sprig molded decorations of various classical scenes and symbols that alternate between pink and green. Finally, the rim is decorated with a dense border of green flowers with four leaves, each surrounded by an arch. The plate broke into three pieces and was repaired prior to arriving at the Connecticut Historical Society. Additionally, the plate has a wire metal wire support and chain to facilitate display.
Object number1973.42.9
MarkingsStamped mark found on the bottom of the plate, "WEDGWOOD" with seriphs. There is an additional mark opposite this one, which probably states "ENGLAND", that was obscured during the manufacturing process.
