DescriptionLarge, oval platter of buff-colored earthenware with a blue-tinted glaze, a type of ceramic known as pearlware. The platter has a scalloped rim and a fringe of slightly impressed lines circling the rim. These lines are decorated with a border of hand-painted underglaze cobalt blue. There is crazing over all the surfaces of the platter, and the top surface is covered with many short, deep scratches. The platter has adopted a slight yellow discoloration. There is one chip in the top surface of the rim, which may be one of three stilt marks. There are three additional stilt marks on the bottom of the platter, and two large chips in the bottom surface of the rim. Finally, there is one crack running the width of the rim.

MarkingsThere is one typed, rectangular, paper label adhered to the bottom of the platter. It reads, "This oval, 16 3/4" x 12 3/4", pottery charger, unmarked on bottom by its/ maker, with wavy upper surface approaching the edge and dark-blue fringe thereon/ was bought in 1929, because of its similarilty [sic] to the Wm. Wood & Sons platter of/ her mother-in-law Mrs. Edwin Pitkin Jones, by Mrs. Edward Payson-8-Jones (Edwin/ Pitkin-7-Elijah-6-Samuel-5-Israel-4-Thomas-3-Benjamin-2-Thomas-1), 1864-1956,/ of Winsted, Ct. 1967/ [signed] Roderick Bissell Jones/ Roderick Bissell Jones, son of/ Edward Payson Jones".NotesAccording to the donor's note affixed to the back of the platter, it was purchased in 1929 by his mother, Frances Isabella Bronson Jones (Mrs. Edward Payson Jones), because of its similarity to a William Wood & Sons platter owned by her mother-in-law, Mary Giddings Coult Jones (Mrs. Edwin Pitkin Jones) (1830-1910).On View
