DescriptionGirl's wool jacket and skirt set in red, black, and plaid (red, black, yellow, green, white, and blue plaid). Both the skirt and jacket are classic examples of a girl's kilt and boiled wool jacket from the second half of the twentieth century.
The jacket (.a) is boiled red wool with plaid wool lining in the body and a nylon blend lining in the sleeves. The front of the jacket is straight, with pockets on either side (4 3/4 inches from the bottom hem and 4 1/2 inches long). The pockets have vertical standing flaps that are bias-bound in black wool. The opening, neck, bottom, and sleeve edges are all bias-bound with black wool. All front opening corners are rounded. There are four faux-metal plastic buttons, silver in color, down the left front, backed on the inside with red grosgrain ribbon. An extra button is sewn on the inside. The buttons have a pattern consisting of a rampant lion and a Latin inscription. The back of the jacket has princess seams. The sleeves are two pieces sewn at the back of the arm.
The skirt (.b) is of a different plaid than that of jacket lining, but of the same colors. It wraps around and closes at left proper front, with an overlap of fourteen inches. The proper right edge is left raw with short fringe. The skirt closes at the top with two leather straps that fasten with metal buckles. The underlap closes with a metal hook and loop. Front darts on either side are 3/4 inch deep and 3 1/2 inches long. The sides and back are pleated. There is a box pleat at the proper right front to imitate closure at left, and knife pleats continue around the rest of the skirt. The pleats are stitched down about four inches to hold them in place. There is a one-inch waistband at the top. There are black ribbon loops for hanging the skirt.
