DescriptionSquare, 31 × 32 inch, Y2K themed quilt designed and made by Leontine Thomson for the Farmington Valley Quilters Millennium Challenge in 2000 using the “yackety yak” quilt blocks designed by Georgia Bonesteel.
The quilt is constructed from five fabrics: patterned quilting cotton in dark blues and silver-colors featuring images of suns, stars, and clocks; patterned quilting cotton in black featuring silver-colored 2000 Millennium terms; mottled deep blue quilting cotton with silver-colored glitter-like elements; mottled black and grey with silver-colored glitter-like elements; light blue quilting cotton; and synthetic metallic silver fabric. The quilting has been done by hand with synthetic metallic silver thread. The batting type is unknown, likely cotton or synthetic.
The quilt top consists of a 10 ¾ inch square center block, designed by Bonesteel; the block resembles a compass-rose and is constructed from three fabrics, light blue, deep blue, and the patterned dark blue and silver fabric. The center block is flanked by Bonesteel’s 12 x 6 inch rectangular blocks, with 6 inch square silver blocks featuring applique at the corners. The quilt blocks are separated by sashing in the black and silver-colored 2000 Millennium themed patterned quilting cotton, and bound with the mottled black and grey fabric. The rectangular blocks are constructed using the mottled deep blue and the patterned dark blue and silver fabric and are edged with the mottled black and grey quilting cotton. The 6 inch square corner blocks feature appliqued phrases with appliqued details, such as clocks and stars, fussy cut from the blue and silver patterned fabric on a synthetic metallic silver fabric ground. The corner blocks feature the following phrases appliqued in the mottled black and grey quilting cotton: upper left hand corner, “2000”; upper right hand corner, “BIG / DEAL”; lower left hand corner, “YACKETY / YACK”; lower right hand corner, “Y2K”.
The quilt back features a center square in the patterned quilting cotton in dark blues and silver-colors featuring images of suns, stars, and clocks surrounded by the mottled black and grey with silver-colored glitter-like elements. There is a quilt hanging sleeve along the upper edge of the quilt in the mottled black and grey. A handwritten quilt label of colored markers on unbleached muslin featuring sketches of hearts and a vine is affixed at the bottom center of the quilt, “’YAKETY YAK” pattern designed by Georgia Bonesteel / Farmington Valley Quilters / Millenium Challenge / by / Leontine M. Thompson / In the year / 2000 / In Farmington / Connecticut”.
