DescriptionBethlehem Star quilt, pieced of various (mostly solid-colored) silk diamond-shaped patches. The star has eight points. the colors are carefully laid out to create a shimmering effect of dark to light to dark. Colors of the central star are red, purple, brown, pale pink, green, beige, taupe, blue, and black. In the four corners of the center field are circular star bursts in red, cream, and purlple; on the sides are half-round star bursts. This center field is boardered with eight-pointed stars with alternating dark/light points in a variety of colors. The silks are mostly solids, but there are slaso a few fabrics in plaid, ombre, and other patterned weaves. Taffeta dominates the fabrics, but there are also velvets and ribbed weaves. The background fabric is taupe taffeta. The edges of the quilt are bound with the taupe taffeta, and then trimmed with taupe silk corded fringe. The backing fabric is very pale pink glazed cotton. The batting is thin, white cotton.
The elaborate quilting is worked in approximately 3/8 inch grids, and echoed lines. Around the star bursts are feathered circles. The quilting is done in taupe silk thread at 10 stitches to the inch.
