DescriptionSixth-plate daguerreotype of Daniel Chapman Spencer sitting in the driver's seat of a wagon outfitted with drawers and compartments for holding a Yankee peddler/traveling salesman's goods. A team of two horses is hitched to the wagon. A small dog is standing on the ground next to one of the front wheels.

Spencer is wearing a stovepipe hat, and his jacket sports wide lapels. He is wearing the customary white shirt with upturned collar and dark tie. He has a beard, but no moustache.

In the background, there is a house on the left and what may be a workshop on the right. A man is standing outside the workshop, in front of which sit barrels of various sizes.

NotesConstituent note: The daguerreotype is said to show "Daniel C. Spencer" outside his home in Higganum, CT, on the road to Clinton, CT. Barbara Spencer Wright, who donated this photograph, was married to Rod Spencer, whose grandfather's name was Daniel Chapman Spencer.
