DescriptionCarte de visite in a daguerreotype or ambrotype case of a woman who is probably Lucy Stockbridge Burdett. She is young, probably in her twenties. It is difficult to tell whether the bodice of her dress is in view, or whether it is a cape or other outer garment. Regardless, it is trimmed with a lace collar. Her hair is parted in the middle and fashioned into what appear to be buns that cover her ears, with a braid crossing the crown of her head.
Object number1976.142.0
InscribedVerso of CDV, printed in black ink: "T. R. Burnham, / PHOTOGRAPHER, / 351 Washington"

"Negatives preserved."

Handwritten in blue ink: "21976"

Handwritten in pencil, old accession number and "Lucy Burdett"
NotesConstituent note: The cataloging worksheet in the object file states that the woman depicted is Lucy/Mrs. Thomas Burdett, the mother of Emma L. Burdett. Thomas Burdett (1814-1903) was married to Caroline Prescott (1819-1913). They were the parents of Emma C. Burdett (1841-1877) and Charles Burdett (1848-1902). Charles Burdett was married to Lucy Stockbridge (1848-1896), and their children were Emma L. (1884-1964) and Ralph Burdett (1880-1956). Based on the life dates of Caroline Burdett and Lucy Burdett, the age of the woman in the image, and the years that Thomas Burnham had his photographic studio in Boston, the subject is probably Lucy Stockbridge Burdett.
