DescriptionA marble monument with a statue of a woman in classical dress on a high rectangular base is situated on a grassy lawn beneath a weeping willow. The woman holds a scroll in her left hand and quill pen in her right hand. A pile of books is to the left of her feet. Two additional scrolls are to the right. Garlands tied with filets surround the upper part of the base. An inscription reads: "IN / MEMORY OF / ABRAHAM LINCOLN. / Born February 12th 1809. / INAUGURATED PRESIDENT, MARCH 4th 1861. / ISSUED THE PROCLAMATION OF / EMANCIPATION, / JANUARY 1st 1863. / REINAUGURATED PRESIDENT, MARCH 4th 1865. / ASSASSINATED, APRIL 15th 1865. / Died April 15th 1865. / in the 57th year of his age. / THE NATION'S FRIEND." Ivy grows on the willow tree at the right. The dome of the United States Capitol building is visible above additional trees in the left background.
