Megan Ramirez was interviewed as part of the Connecticut Museum of Culture and History's Community History Project discussing moments of change in her life.
Megan Ramirez describes her experience of living through Hurricane Katrina when she was a child. She talks about New Orleans before, during, and after the hurricane. Megan shares her views of the authorities' responses before and after the hurricane, noting that the evacuation process began too late because they underestimated the severity of the storm.
Megan describes how and where her family evacuated, the damage that was done to their house, how her family survived in the days after the storm, and how long it took for her house to be repaired.
Experiencing Hurricane Katrina was a significant moment in Megan's life because it helped her realize of the importance of community. It also helped her see the beauty of humanity, which appears during a crisis when people are in need. Through this experience, Megan also learned that living in different places can be interesting.
