DescriptionThree-story academic building has a cupola, a hip roof, four chimneys and an arched doorway. Boys and girls stand on the lawn. A man is at the left near what appears to be a gate. Six large trees surround the building.

InscribedOn recto, lithographed title beneath image, "BACON ACADEMY, COLCHESTER, CONN." Letterpress text beneath title reads, in part, "Bacon Academy. / The Institution, which derives its name from the late Pierpont Bacon, who gave his whole estate, estimated at about $35,000 to endow it, is situated in Colchester, a place pleasant, remarkably healthy and easy of access. / The government and instruction are committed to a Preceptor, one male and two or three female assistants, one of whom is expected to be qualified to teach a female school of a higher grade.... The Price of Tuition is for Latin and Greek, 6 dollars a Term, for Mathematics, Grammar, Geography and Arithmetic, 4 dollars, and for the elementary English Studies, 3 dollars a Term, with an additional charge of 50 cents for fuel, in each of the terms which include a portion of the winter...."
