DescriptionA small boy stands beside a woman seated in an upholstered armchair. He wears a short jacket, vest, and long pants. His left hand is by the side of his head. The woman wears a blouse with full sleeves, a bodice, a skirt, and an apron. She wears eyeglasses and has a scarf tied around her head. Her right foot rests on a small wooden footstool. Her right hand rests on a table covered with a tablecloth. Objects on the table include a switch, and possibly, fruit and bread. The woman appears to be pointing with her right index finger at some sprigs of leaves lying on the wide floor boards. With her left hand, she points to an open book in her lap. A door in the right background is closed with a latch and bolt. A framed picture on the wall in the left background depicts a blasted tree beside a body of water. The entire right side of the tree appears to be dead; only the limbs at the left appear to be living.
