DescriptionA large black and white dog, identified in the title as a Newfoundland, holds the front of a child's dress in his mouth. The child clutches a large ring in the dog's collar in his left hand and a leafy plant in his right hand. The lower part of the child's body and the dog's forepaws are submerged in a pond or the edge of a deep stream. A toy boat is in the left foreground, near water plants. A woman is running across a grassy field in the left backgrund. She wears a dress and apron. Smoke issues from the chimney of a house behind her. A large tree with a broken branch is in the right background. High hills or mountains are in the distance.
