DescriptionA large group of men stand in a landscape. Most wear robes and cloaks. Some wear turbans. Some have beards and mustaches. Most are barefoot. A tall, elderly, bearded man in the center holds a small bag in his left hand. With his right hand, he deposits a coin in the outstretched palm of a young man at the left. A second young man has his arm around the first young man's shoulders. Some men in the background hold what appear to be shepherd's crooks. A second elderly bearded man holds a boy by the shoulders and forces him towards the right, where a black African is seated on a camel, which lies in the right foreground. Several packages bound with ropes are nearby. Two other men stand in the background holding ropes attached to the bridles of two camels, both with heavy loads. A young man sits on the ground beside a dead lamb or sheep. The square, stone-lined hole in the center foreground is a well or cistern. A man playing a long flute or recorder is in the left background. Palm trees and other trees are in the right background. A large body of water, possibly a bay, with high headlands on either side, is in the distance.
