DescriptionA group of fourteen farm workers harvest grain, apparently wheat. A woman kneeling in the center foreground ties a sheaf together while a young man looks on. To the left, a woman sits beneath a tree breast-feeding an infant. A small girl holds her left hand. A jug, a barrel, a basket with a handle, and a cloak or blanket are nearby. Two men are at work directly behind her. A man holding a sickle over his arm stands facing her. Behind him is an elderly man on a horse with a dog beside him. At the right, a small girl stands with a branch in her left hand and a barrel in her right hand. A second dog stands beside her. Additional men and women work in a field in the background. A man wearing a smock and holding a whip or goad stands beside two horses hitched to a two-wheeled cart. A rail fence, a gate, a house, and large trees are in the distance. The women wear caps. Most men wear vests, neckties, and shirts with very full sleeves. Some wear trousers, and some wear breeches.
