DescriptionOfficers in military uniforms on horseback are in an open area in front of the walls of a city. At the left, an artillery crew stands beside a cannon. Cannon balls are on the ground nearby. Dead or wounded men lie in the foreground. A single soldier stands at the far left. At the right, three soldiers with muskets with fixed bayonets advance towards the city walls. Another soldier carries a wounded comrade back towards the left. Additional ranks of soldiers advance behind them. One man carries an American flag. A pile of rocks and lumber in the left foreground may be a barricade. A Mexican flag flies from the battlements in the background. A palm tree and two church steeples are visible above the smoke of battle.
