Cynthia was the daughter of John Davenport Cheney and Mary Wilcox Russell, and the granddaughter of Frank W. Cheney and Mary Bushnell. Alice Gay Cheney was the daughter of John Platt Chneey and Alice Gay, and the granddaughter of James Woodbridge Cheney and Harriet Elizabeth Cheney.
