With his right, hand he points at a small boy at the left. Another boy kneels at the right, holding his left hand to his eyes and his right hand to his buttocks. Other boys and girls stand in the foreground and sit in chairs or on benches at tables in the background. Some children appear to be crying. Boys wear smocks or short jackets. One boy holds a hat. At least two boys appear to be barefoot. One girl hides her face in her apron. Some girls hold open books and there are additional books on the table in the right background. At the far left is a music stand with sheet music on it. Another music book is on a table or closed piano or harpsichord. A chair is nearby. Four hats hang on the wall in the background. A large sheet of paper, possibly a map, hangs on the wall at the right near a clock with a pendulum. A potted plant is on the windowsill. The teacher's desk and chair are at the far right.
