DescriptionAn elderly man sits in a large, ornately carved chair, reading from a book, presumably a Bible, which he holds in his lap. A young girl stands at his side, looking up at his face. Her right cheek rests on her right hand. The old man wears a heavy overcoat over a vest and shirt. He is bald, with gray hair hanging down on the sides. The girl wears a dress with a wide neckline and short sleeves. Drapery is in the left background. A landscape is visible through a window in the right background. A church steeple is in the distance.
