DescriptionTen soldiers form a firing squad at the right. They wear military uniforms consisting of jackets with epaulettes, breeches, and hats with plumes. Each man has a sword, a knapsack, a canteen, and an ammunition pouch. They aim their rifles at a man who is kneeling on the ground at the left. His uniform jacket lies on the ground beside him. With his right arm, he pushes away a little dog which has its forepaws on his shoulder. Three men stand in the background beside an open grave. The man holding a shovel is probably the gravedigger. In the distance is a town with church spires.
