DescriptionBoy's straw hat made from decorative braided straw with sage green cording used as a decoration. The upturned brim is 1 5/8 inch all around. The oval-shaped crown is approximately five inches wide, 5 3/4 inches long, and 2 3/4 inches high. In the center of the top of the crown is a button, 7/8 inch in diameter, covered in green silk to match the cording. Six loops of silk cording decorate the crown, the loops being attached around the base of the crown. There is a tassel of the silk on the proper left, between the brim and crown. The headband is made of a light blue twill-woven fabric. The paper lining for the top is stitched under the upper edge of the headband.

MarkingsThe center of the paper lining at the top of the crown probably had a maker's or distributor's label. It is torn out, leaving only a black outline on white paper of what may have been a maltese cross shape, and the decipherable "1/4". Glued to the proper right side headband is a square of white paper with "18" and two very thin edging lines stamped in light blue. Stitched to the braided straw inside the paper lining are two labels stamped onto white fabric squares. In black ink on one is "6 1/4", and, in red ink, "28" on the second. On View
