DescriptionWoman's hat made from braided straw or grass with decorative elements of folded, loosely-woven cotton around the base of the crown. The flat brim is 3 1/2 inches wide all around. The crown is approximately three inches deep and is an oval shape: five inches wide and six inches deep. The white or cream-colored cotton has been folded at least four times and arranged around the base of the crown, spilling onto the brim. In the front, the cotton is taken and folded vertically into 1/2-inch-wide pleats which have then been bunched up with a row of horizontal stitching. This creates a wide mass of cloth which measures approximately nine inches wide and five inches high, covering part of the brim and continuing over part of the crown top. The interior of the crown is lined with more cotton, which is folded under and stitched around the base with the other long edge of the strip gathered at the center top. Very thin cording is stitched under the lining, then caught with stitches 5/8 of an inch into the underside of the brim before hanging loose as ties. The proper right tie has a small velvet button attached to the end, 6 5/8 inches from the crown.
