DescriptionWoman's bonnet of natural-colored braided straw with very large fabric flowers in pink, and two styles of ornamental decoration made from straw around the brim. The brim is approximately 3 1/2 inches wide at the center front, narrowing to approximately 1 3/4 inch at the back. It is decorated along the edge with a braid of beige straw, attached in a circular pattern to the brim. A second decoration, also made from straw in the shape of braided flowers (1 1/2 inch in diameter) is stitched to the brim along the inner edge, next to and sometimes overlapping the base of the crown. The oval-shaped crown is a scant five inches wide and 5 3/4 inches long, and a scant 1 1/4 inch in height. Two large pink flowers, made from velvet, plain-woven cotton and silk are stitched to the inner brim on the proper left side. These pink flowers have yellow stamens. Two sprigs of green extend from underneath at the center front. The brim is lined with a pink satin. The interior of the crown is lined with a white silk, stitched all around the edge and drawn up at the top with a gathering stitch. A narrow black ribbon is laid over the top of the crown, under the decorative straw work across the brim and stitched at the edge of the brim on each side for ties. This is most likely not original to the bonnet; the bonnet would have had ties that did not bend the brim at each side. This ribbon has been removed.
