DescriptionWoman's bonnet, also known as a lingerie hat, of ivory linen or hand-embroidered cotton with matching cotton floss. The embroidered design is of vines with a leaf and bunches of round flowers formed by the satin stitch with a hole in the center. The wide brim, supported by a wire attached just below the outer edge, is four inches wide at the center front, narrowing to two inches at the center back. The edge is embroidered with the buttonhole stitch, forming a scalloped edge all around. The brim is lined with plain fabric. The inner edge is finished with a heavy canvas tape, one inch wide, stitched to the top side. The crown is a large circle of the embroidered fabric, 8 5/8 inches in diameter, stitched to a side piece three inches high. The side piece, without embroidery, is gathered into the top seam and buttoned to the brim. The buttonholes on the crown are two inches apart: the corresponding buttons on the brim are 1 3/8 inches apart, taking up the excess fabric as a ruffle between each button. The small pearl buttons have a decorative carving on the face. It appears the crown can be unbuttoned from the brim.
