DescriptionWoman's bodice (a) from an about 1830 dress, and a jacket (b) of about 1895 made from the fabric of the dress. The fabric is a cylinder-printed calico, with a design of red, green, blue, and dark brown floral bouquets on a background of dark brown dots forming a vine pattern. The bodice has a wide neckline, which is piped. The fabric of the front is set in a V-shaped panel, which is gathered horizontally; the center is overlaid with a vertical narrow strip of piped self-fabric. The bodice back is pieced with curved center back seams. The center back opening fastens with brass hooks and eyes. The bodice is stitched smoothly into the 1 3/4-inch-wide waistband. The armscyes are piped, and the sleeves have been cut off. The bodice lining is plain, undyed cotton.

The jacket (b) has a yoke and a high, round neckline with a 7/8-inch-deep band collar. The collar is worked with a buttonhole at the center back for attaching a separate collar. The jacket front and back are closely gathered into the bottom of the yoke. The fullness is controlled at the waistline, which has a casing for a drawstring. The armscye is piped. The full, two-piece sleeves are gathered into the shoulder and into a 4 1/8-inch-wide cuff at the wrist. The cuffs fasten with two tagua nut ("vegetable ivory") buttons. The center front opening of the jacket fastens with two abalone buttons on the yoke and with five mother of pearl buttons below the yoke. The yoke is lined with self-fabric.
