DescriptionThree men, a woman, a girl, and an infant in a domestic interior. One man sits at a table and uses a quill pen to sign a paper that reads "Total Abstinence." An inkwell is on the table. A dog sits beside him. A second man on the left in ragged clothing holds a bottle as he walks out the door. A third man looks on. The woman sits at the right, holding the baby who holds a rattle. The girl stands nearby. A musket and bellows hang on the wall. A teapot, mug, and other dishes are on a shelf and in an open cupboard.

InscribedOn recto, lithographed title beneath image, "Lifting the Mortgage. / He signs the pledge / Once more within his house / Shall dwell sweet peace and dear domestic love. / While Vice and Famine flee before his vows / His wife with tearful eyes thanks God above."
