DescriptionTwo women are seated in the interior of a room. The older woman sits in a rocking chair. She wears a dark dress with a white collar, a cap decorated with ruching, and eyeglasses. She holds a newspaper in her lap. The younger woman wears a dressing gown over a long skirt. She is breast feeding a baby. A young girl shows a wicker basket containing four kittens to the elderly woman. The girl is wearing an apron, a short dress with ruffled sleeves, a necklace or locket, and high-buttoned shoes. A spotted cat stands on its hind legs, leaning on her skirt. A doll and an alphabet, possibly a hornbook, are in the left foreground. A wicker basket is on a chair nearby. A pitcher of flowers, apparently roses, a spool of thread, a thimble, and a pincushion containing pins are the window sill at the far left. Books are in a two-shelf bookcase that hangs from a nail on the wall in the background. A tray rests on a chest beneath. A tall wooden cupboard is in the right background. A bowl of fruit is on a table in the right foreground.
