DescriptionA man and a woman are seated at the base of a large tree. The woman wears a bonnet and a shawl over her dress. She holds a small piece of cloth that she appears to be sewing or darning. A bottle and plate are in a basket nearby. The man wears a vest, tie, shirt, trousers, and boots. He is leaning against a sheaf of wheat or hay and reading a newspaper. His broad-brimmed hat and a small shaggy dog are nearby. At the left, a boy wearing a straw hat lies face down in a pile of hay of wheat. A pitchfork and another agricultural implement lean against the tree. Haystacks are visible in the field in the left background. Trees are on a hill in the right background.
