DescriptionWoman's hat made of red sueded cotton, decorated with black grosgrain ribbon and a ribbon tie. It is almost circular in shape, with a round brim and flat back. This small hat is made to perch on the top of the head. It is attached by a band of black grosgrain ribbon, one inch wide, that is stitched under the headband on the proper right side and sewn around a loop of elastic on the proper left. This suggests the hat is put on with the ribbon around the back of the head. The hat is constructed by drawing a circle of the red sueded cotton around a padding of black material to create the semi-circular brim, 2 1/2 inches wide at the center front. The gathered fabric is attached to a circle of loosely-woven black cotton. The crown is formed where the fabric is gathered. A ruffle, formed by a strip (two inches wide, then folded in half) of the red cotton is gathered up and attached over the black cotton in a serpentine design, creating a densely trimmed area approximately four inches in diameter. A black bow made from a nylon grosgrain ribbon is also stitched to the back among the red ruffles. The underside of the hat has a pink grosgrain headband, to which the underside of the brim is stitched. The hat is also lined with the black cotton. The union label is stitched under the headband at the back. The ties are attached as described above.
