DescriptionMan in overcoat and hat smoking a cigar while driving a sulky drawn by a horse around a dirt track. Inscribed on back: "John A. Pilgard jogging his yearling Hartford Louise, / by Protector 1:59 ¼, dam, Hartford Queen 2:15 / by San Francisco at Sage Park, Windsor, in 1934 / Hartford Louise perished in a barn burned by artillery fire in Belgium in 1940."

NotesSubject Note: John A.Pilchard, a prominent Hartford businessman and banker died in 1935, just one year after this photograph was taken. He had just been elected Mayor of Hartford but had not yet taken office. A racing enthusiast, Pilchard was one of a group of businessmen who tried to revive harness racing at Charter Oak Park in the early 1930s. He owned, bred, and drove race horses. Hartford Louise was named for his daughter.
