DescriptionA man stands beside a large boulder in a rocky glen. A steep cliff is visible in the background. The path in the left foreground is probably the road from Meriden to Berlin, described in Barber's Historical Collections of Connecticut. This road ran through the Blue Mountains, subsequently known as the Hanging Hills. Cold Spring itself is located near the summit of South Mountain. It was famous in the 19th century as a place where ice could be found in almost every month of the year
