DescriptionHand puppet of a young Japanese man named "Toshi" composed of a papier-mâché head with a cloth body and painted paper hands. The head has painted features (probably using watercolor) including red cheeks, black brows, pink lips, and brown eyes with black synthetic hair. He wears a tunic of blue, green, and black geometrically-patterned cotton fabric with a brown collar. The tunic is tied around the waist with a yellow cotton sash with the bow at the back. His pants and the sleeve that covers the puppeteer’s wrist and arm are made of a brown cotton fabric. Probably used with "The Samurai" puppet (2013.182.5a) and the puppet "Setsu" (2013.182.6) in a play, "The Legend of the Cherry-Tree," written at the request of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, where it was performed.
