DescriptionThe beginning of construction on the new G. Fox and Company Department Store building on Main Street in Hartford in 1917. The intersection of Main and Church Streets is in the foreground. On the east side of Main Street, staging is placed at street level and extends upward to first-floor height. Men carrying a long plank walk along the top of the staging. Other men, horses, wagons, and building materials are visible at street level. A sign along the top of the staging reads "JAMES STEWART & CO. INC / CONTRACTORS / 30 Church St. New York". The Brown Thomson Department Store building is in the right background.
