Subject Note: According to information that came with the photo from the CHS library, Caleb Holmes was a member of the 10th Connecticut Regiment. He was killed at the battle of Darbytown Road, Virginia, on 13 October 1864.

Date Note: Dated by when the original was taken, not when the half-tone was done. The original was taken during the Civil War, 1861- 1864. The halftone must date from at least twenty years later. The original on which the halftone was based appears to have been a cased photograph, such as a tintype, daguerreotype, or ambrotype. (Finlay 5/20/2002)
