NotesSubject Note: Winfield Scott (1786-1866) was appointed Army General in Chief in 1841. He gained lasting renown during the Mexican War (1846-1848). In 1852, he achieved the rank of Lieutenant General, the first to do so since George Washington. He remained in command at the start of the Civil War, retiring at the end of 1861.
