DescriptionGroup portrait of a family, consisting of a middle-aged man, a woman, two boys, and a girl, probably in the interior of a photographer's studio. The husband has a beard and mustache and wears a black coat or cape and holds a top hat with a feather. His wife is seated and holds her daughter's hand. Her dress is trimmed with lace. She also wears a bow tie and a crocheted snood or cap. The two boys wear tunics or smocks. A patterned carpet is on the floor. Patterned wallpaper is on the wall. An upholstered sofa, probably a photographer's prop, is in the left background. Drapery with tassles is in the right background.

NotesSubject Note: Louis Kossuth (1802-1894) was the Governor of Hungary who fought for its independence in the nineteenth century. He became the President of Hungary when it finally won its independence from Austria in 1849, but he had to give up his position when the Russians took over Hungary later that year.

Source Note: Lithograph copied after a daguerreotype by Antoine Claudet (1797-1867).
