InscribedOn verso, upper left, in pencil, "Last name/Denton"; lower right, in pencil, accession numberNotesSubject Note: There were two men from Connecticut with the last name Denton who served during the Civil War. Hart Denton was from Norwalk, Connecticut. He enlisted On 10 September 1862 and was mustered in to the Twenty-Seventh Regiment Infantry Company C as a Private on 4 October 1862. He was captured on 3 May 1863 in Chancellorsville, Virginia. On 14 May 1863 he was paroled, and on 27 July 1863 he was mustered out.
Matthew Denton was from Greenwich, Connecticut. He enlisted on 8 September 1862 and was mustered in to the Twenty-Eighth Regiment Infantry Company H as a Private on 15 November 1862. He was mustered out on 28 August 1863.
The man in this photograph is wearing an officer's uniform and is therefore neither of these two men. (Ruocco 5/5/2012)
