He enlisted on April 24, 1861 and was mustered in to the Third Regiment Infantry Company C as a Corporal on May 14, 1861. He was mustered out on August 12, 1861. On August 26, 1861 he re-enlisted. On September 7, 1861 he was mustered in to the Sixth Regiment Connecticut Volunteer Infantry Company F as a First Sergeant. On March 1, 1863 he was promoted to Second Lieutenant for Company K. On June 5, 1864 he was promoted to First Lieutenant of Company H and on Octiober 2, 1864 he was appointed Adjutant of the Sixth Regiment Infantry. He was discharged on November 23, 1864.
