DescriptionA copy of an original portrait of a woman, Mabel Harlakenden. She is seated at an angle turned toward her left. Her hair is worn straight and close to her head on the top as if wearing a Juliette cap. Just above her ear line it becomes full and curly, falling to her shoulders. The subject has almond shaped blue eyes, a long straight nose and fair skin. She wears a strand of large pearls, a low-cut portrait collar red dress and a brooch. In gilt frame with ornate corners.

NotesSubject Note: According to information in object file 1937.6.1, Mabel Harlakenden was born on 27 September 1614 at Earle's Colne Priory, England, the daughter of Richard and Margaret (Hobart) Harlakenden. She came to America with her brother Roger on 4 July 1635 in the ship Defence. She married Governor John Haynes of Cambridge, Massachusetts about 1636. John Haynes was the first governor of Connecticut, and died in March of 1654. Mabel married second, Samuel Eaton, son of Governor Theophilus Eaton of New Haven, on 17 November 1654. It is said that both she and her second husband died in 1655 within two days of each other. She had four children by her first husband.

Object Note: According to museum records, this is a copy made from the original which hung for a long time in the ancestral English home. Name of the artist and time of making the copy is unknown.
