He enlisted and was mustered in on December 24, 1863 into the First Regiment Connecticut Volunteer Artillery Company I as a Artificer. He was mustered out on September 25, 1865.Artificers were blacksmiths who repaired cannons and other items for artillery units. They also did small-scale manufacturing of equipment.
