He enlisted and was mustered into the First Regiment Connecticut Volunteer Heavy Artillery Company B as a Private on May 22, 1861. On December 19, 1863 he was transfered to Compnay I. He re-enlisted on Decmber 28, 1863 and was promoted to Corporal on May 10, 1864. He was promoted to Sergeant on January 11, 1865, and was mustered out on September 25, 1865.
