Smith of Winchester mustered in as private in the Second Connecticut Volunteer Heavy Artillery on September 11 1862. He was appointed commissary sergeant February 8 1864. He was tranferred to unassigned detachment with the Fifteenth Veterans Reserve Corps on May 27 1865 and discharged on September 11 1865. (Finlay 4/14/2012)
