Marshall of Milford mustered in as a sergeant in the Fifteenth Connecticut Volunteer Infantry on Aguust 25 1862. On February 16 1864 he was promoted to 1st Lieutenant in the Twenty-Ninth (Colored) Volunteer Infantry. He was promoted to Captain on January 31 1865. He mustered out on October 24 1865.
