Turner of Hartford mustered in as a private in Sixteenth Connecticut Volunteer Infantry on August 24 1862. He was promoted to Sergeant on November 1 1862, to 2nd Lieutenant on January 14 1863, to 1st Lieutenant on May 9 1863 and to Captain on January 10 1864. He was captured on April 20 1864 at the battle of Plymouth, North Carolina, when the entire Union force surrendered following an intense three-day siege.
