InscribedOn verso, upper left, in black ink, "539"; in black ink, "This is a White Oak in the rear of Mr. Clarence Terry's house / on Gillett Street Hartford. It is probably the oldest tree in the town. / Formerly before the neighborhood was built up, it was prominent / object from the highway leading to West Hartford, and it was known as / 'Black John's Oak' from the fact that the cottage occupied by a person thus / designate [sic] was locate [sic] on the same lot about where Gov. Jewells house stood / afterwards. It is of the same variety of white oak as was the Charter Oak. / Although very much younger, it has many points of resemblence to the old tree / that fell to the ground August 21st 1856. / Fred. S.
